The court case I researched was New Jersey vs. T.L.O. The court case is about a freshman student, T.L.O. who was caught in the bathroom with another girl who was smoking marijuana. The girls were caught by the Vice Principle of the school, the other girl told the vice principle she was smoking but T.L.O. said that she wasn't smoking. The Vice Principle had reason to search T.L.O's purse and he found cigarettes in plain view, so that gave him more reason to search her purse throughly. He then found marijuana, rolling paper, a wade of $1 dollar bills, and a pipe. Then that lead to her confession, that she was selling marijuana to the students, but then T.L.O. sued the school because she believed that her Fourth Amendment was violated. The court said that the school had a reason to search her purse because she was selling marijuana to students.
This affected us because schools can now search your locker or bag for illegal drugs that can't be at the school. This wouldn't violate our Fourth Amendment if the school did this because they have a duty to get our school environment safe for us.
